350 new buses allotted to Tiruchi district: Nehru

TIRUCHI: Of the 3,000 new buses which would be operated by the State Transport Corporation within a month, as many as 350 of them had been allotted to Tiruchi district alone, the Transport Minister K.N. Nehru said on Sunday.

Distributing free colour television sets to a total number of 1,041 families of Kannanurpalayam panchayat in Thuraiyur Taluk, Mr. Nehru said buses would be operated in the new route from Kannanurpalayam to Thuraiyur via Kaliayapatti, Singalanthapuram and Kalipatti and from Thuraiyur to Thathiengarpet via Velayuthampalayam, Kurumbapatti, Kallikudi and Devarappanpatti.

He said majority of the schemes launched by the State government were aimed at welfare of women. Steps had been taken to provide free colour television sets to around 2 crore families in the State, the Minister said.

Presiding over the function, the Collector T. Soundiah said developmental schemes worth over Rs. 3,000 crore had been inaugurated in the district during the last three years.

He said revolving funds had been given to 5,000 women self help groups in the district adding that 98 per cent of the Rs. 83 crore amount given as economic assistance had been repaid.

Revenue officials and local body representatives participated in the function, an official press release here said.

Earlier on Saturday, Mr. Nehru distributed colour TVs to 2,783 beneficiaries in K. Periyapatti and Seegampatti villages near Manapparai.

Speaking on the occasion, he said an intensive camp exclusively to benefit the physical labourers will be organised in all the taluks in the district shortly.

He said that all the wings of the Unorganised Labourers Welfare Board would identify the persons eking out their livelihood through physical labour and enrol them as members.

He appealed to the eligible labourers to avail themselves of this opportunity and enrol themselves as members.

Mr. Nehru, who flagged off two new bus routes -- between Puthanatham to Tiruchi via Manapparai and Puthanatham to Dindigul via Ilangakurichi -- said that the Tiruchi regional unit of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation would operate new / additional bus service from Chathiram Bus stand. The new services would be operated to Kottapatti via K. Periyapatti; and to Therkku Serpatti.

5,707 TVs distributed:

The State Minister for Forests, N. Selvaraj, distributed 5,707 colour television-sets to the villagers of Edhumalai, Poonampalayam, Therampalayam, Veeramanipatti and Aevoor.

He highlighted the several welfare measures being implemented by the state government for the welfare of the weaker sections
