Electrification of the Villupuram–Tiruchi over

The electrification of the Villupuram–Tiruchi chord line section has already been completed and the trial run of a light engine in this section was conducted, the Divisional Railway Manager, S. Subramhanyan, said on Tuesday

Work on the construction of power sub-stations at Tiruchi and Vriddhachalam junctions were progressing. The trial run of the loco proved a success. Passenger train service in the electrified section would commence in the section after completion of the mandatory inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Mr. Subramhanyan told presspersons here.

He said that works on the conversion of platforms 6 and 7 at Tiruchi Junction into broad gauge standard were progressing as per schedule. A major portion of the work had already been completed. Signalling works had to be taken up which would consume some time. Preliminary works for laying the BG tracks were over. Both platforms would be commissioned by this year end, he said.

Replying to a question, Mr. Subramhanyan said work on converting Alakkudi into a ‘crossing station’ would be completed by October. The new station building was ready. Engineering works and laying of BG track at the station were in the advance stage.

A couple of mobile toilets at Srirangam railway station recently had proved a big hit with the commuters. Some customisation were done in the toilets to suit railways requirements and plans were afoot for the introduction of the same in 10 small stations besides at the railway level crossings. The Railways had already sanctioned this proposal, Mr. Subramhanyan added.

Following repeated demands of the travelling public, the railways had ordered the removal of the side middle berths in all trains from July 13. Advance tickets were being booked only for 72 berths in each coach instead of 81 berths earlier. Work of removing the side middle berth and lowering side upper berths would be carried out gradually.
