Rs. 90-crore modernisation of Golden Rock Railway Workshop

TIRUCHI: The Southern Railway headquarters has approved a detailed estimate for the modernisation of the over 80-year-old Golden Rock Railway Workshop here for which funds to the tune of Rs. 90.27 crore has been sanctioned.

Bulk of the funds amounting to Rs. 68.78 crore would be spent for acquiring modern mechanical equipment and replacement of the old machines, while Rs. 15.14 crore would be utilised for augmenting infrastructure facilities and repairs of structures under ‘civil’ works.

With the detailed estimate having been approved, tenders for smaller machines will be floated soon and the entire modernisation programme completed in two years time, says Chief Workshop Manager J. Digi.

In addition to carrying out period overhaul (POH) of diesel locomotives and coaches, the workshop, which has over 30 ‘shops’ inside, is also involved in the manufacture of various types of wagons besides exporting ‘in-service’ diesel engines after modifications.

As part of the technological upgrade plan, a modern laboratory will be established at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crore inside the workshop for material testing which is at present being done in Chennai.

A special purpose multi-station machine –‘PAMA’ - costing Rs. 40 crore for carrying out repairs of engine blocks; a robotic welding system with automation and portable plasma profile cutting machine are some of the major advanced equipment to be procured under the modernisation plan.
Training centre

The three Traversors, which are the lifeline of the workshop, would be replaced and the Basic Training Centre upgraded.

Modernisation of the workshop will enhance the wagon production capacity from 560 to 1,000 wagons per year besides enabling it to carry out POH of 160 diesel locos per annum from 120 locos now.

The POH of air-conditioned coaches will double from 120 to 240, says Mr. Digi.

He said work on the huge shed inside the workshop to accommodate high horsepower General Motors locomotives would be completed before July.

The workshop had exported 13 metre gauge diesel locos and carried out POH of 20 diesel engines belonging to public sector undertakings in 2008-09.
