Air India Express opens engineering complex

With the increase in its operations from the city, low cost carrier Air India Express has established an engineering stores complex at the Tiruchi Airport for service and repairs of its aircrafts.

The new engineering complex would help quick turn around of the airline's aircrafts. Repair works could also be carried out here, reducing its dependence on major nearby base stations, both in terms of men and material.

The new engineering complex was declared open by Capt.Pawan Arora, Chief Operating Officer, Air India Express, in the presence of H.R.Jagannath, Chief of Engineering, Air India Express, S.Dharmaraj, Airport Controller, and other officials here on Wednesday.

The airline, which launched its services from Tiruchi in March 2007, with just six flights a week to Dubai and Singapore, has rapidly expanded its operations from the city.

Currently, the airline operates 34 flights a week to Singapore, Dubai, Kaula Lumpur, Abu Dhabi, Chennai and Mumbai. The airline has been operating two B 737-800 aircrafts from the station.

Four licensed engineers and eight technicians have been posted at the airport's engineering complex to meet the service and repair requirements of the aircrafts. The stores would also have adequate spares and equipment.

Capt.Arora said the airline was creating necessary infrastructure to meet the needs of its customers. Air India Express has evolved into a truly low cost carrier model. Though several other airlines claimed to be low cost carriers, they were not actually so. “We intend to stay here in the long run and are working on improving our services,” he said.

Mr.Jagannath said Air India Express has come to be accepted by people going by the rising patronage to its services.

The new engineering complex would help ensure that the flights were fully airworthy and operated on time. T.H.Radhakrishnan, Station Manager, Air India, said the city offered more potential for the airline to increase its services.

G.Madhusoodhanan, Deputy General Manager, Air Traffic Control, S.A.Nainar, Deputy Commandant, Central Industrial Security Force, Tiruchi Airport, B.Saravanan, Station Engineer, and other officials were present.
