Trichy Trade Centre getting momentum

TIRUCHI: The proposal for a permanent trade centre at Panjapur in Tiruchi district, mooted by the Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries' Association (TIDITSSIA) and the BHEL Small Industries' Association (BHELSIA), is stated to be at a crucial stage of approval by the State Government.

The much-awaited facility has to be cleared by the Revenue Secretary, it is learnt.

The proposal to allot 40 acres in the 270 acre site being acquired at Panjapur for establishing the integrated bus stand, commercial complex and hotels, and creating other amenities is under the earnest consideration of the Government, according to the State Transport Minister K.N. Nehru.

Government needs time

The cost of the land at Panjapur being one crore rupees per acre, the Government requires time to sort out the financial dimension of the project, Mr. Nehru said, addressing a gathering of industrialists recently. The government has taken cognisance of the imperative need for a trade centre in Tiruchi by virtue of its vantage location, he said.

Industry and trade associations in Tiruchi have for long been asking for a trade centre on the lines of those in Chennai and Coimbatore. The BHELSIA and TIDITSSIA are open to the idea of joining hands with other industry and trade organisations and forming a special purpose vehicle for getting the trade centre established either by themselves or in association with any State Government agency.

The Chennai Trade Centre in an area of 25 acres at a prime location in Nandambakkam is a joint venture of India Trade Promotion Organisation, Government of India, and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), Government of Tamil Nadu.
